Laguna Seca to rename Corkscrew turn after Alex Zanardi
WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca will officially rename its iconic “Corkscrew” turn to the “Zanardi Corkscrew” to honor the late racing legend Alex Zanardi. The dedication ceremony is scheduled for Friday, September 4, marking the 30th anniversary of “The Pass,” Zanardi’s historic and daring overtaking maneuver against Bryan Herta during the 1996 CART season finale.
Zanardi, who drove for Chip Ganassi Racing, became a symbol of the circuit through his fearless driving style. The tribute also recognizes his broader legacy, including his remarkable return to competitive sports as a Paralympic gold medalist handcyclist following a life-altering accident in 2001.
To commemorate the occasion, Chip Ganassi Racing has prepared a special yellow and red livery for Álex Palou’s number 10 car, echoing the design of the Target Honda machine Zanardi drove during his legendary career.
