Laguna Verde Nuclear Plant conducts radiological emergency drill
The Mexican government successfully completed a 12-hour Integrated External Radiological Emergency Plan (PERE) exercise at the Laguna Verde Nuclear Power Plant in Veracruz. The drill was a preventive measure designed to test the response capabilities of federal and state authorities to a hypothetical radiological emergency.
During the simulation, officials evaluated protocols for notification, mobilization, evacuation, medical care, and the establishment of temporary shelters. The exercise focused on a 16-kilometer radius around the plant, though authorities noted that intervention areas could be expanded in a real event. Participating agencies included the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE), the Secretariat of Energy, the Secretariat of Health, the National Guard, the Navy, and the National Civil Protection Coordination, among others.
Authorities emphasized that the drill was based on a simulated scenario and posed no actual risk to the local population. The Laguna Verde plant is a critical infrastructure component, generating 6.52% of the electricity produced by CFE, an amount comparable to the combined consumption of Veracruz and Tlaxcala.
