Lahav Shani calls for accountability and equality ahead of Israeli elections

Lahav Shani, chief conductor of the Munich Philharmonic, has issued a personal statement ahead of Israel's upcoming parliamentary elections, calling on leaders to take responsibility for failures related to the October 7 Hamas massacre.

In a text published in the newspaper Haaretz, Shani criticized the widespread boycott of Arab political parties, describing the practice as ‘shameful and racially motivated.’ He argued that anyone seeking to lead the country must commit to representing its entire population, including the approximately 20% of Israelis who are Arab citizens.

As polls indicate a tight race between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his opponents, Arab parties could potentially serve as kingmakers in government formation. However, Netanyahu and his allies, along with portions of the Jewish opposition, have questioned the inclusion of Arab parties in coalitions, citing security concerns and disagreements over the definition of Israel as a Jewish state.
