Lahendong Geothermal Plant does not threaten Waruga cultural sites
Ibrahim Ratulangi Tular, Chairman of the Tombulu Cultural Institution (LAKT) 'Tawaang' in Tomohon, North Sulawesi, has stated that the Lahendong Geothermal Power Plant (PLTP) does not conflict with the preservation of Waruga cultural sites.
He emphasized that the power plant's operations can coexist with the protection of approximately 100 Waruga, which are traditional stone burial sites of the Minahasa people. Tular noted that the plant has operated for over 25 years without negatively impacting the cultural heritage or the local groundwater supply used for daily needs and agriculture. He maintained that as long as operations are conducted responsibly with respect for the environment and heritage, industrial and cultural preservation can proceed simultaneously.
