Lahore rainfall improves air quality amid seasonal smog crisis

Rainfall in Lahore has provided temporary relief from severe smog, improving the city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) to 69. Previously, the AQI had been reported as high as 153, and historical data shows levels in Punjab have surpassed 1000 during peak smog months in November.

The pollution, driven by industrial emissions, vehicle exhaust, and crop burning, carries significant social costs. Beyond the public health impact and school closures, the crisis places a heavy burden of unpaid care work on families, particularly women, who manage the health of children and elderly relatives during periods of poor air quality.

While the recent showers have brought cooler temperatures and cleaner air, the Meteorological Department forecasts a return to hot and dry conditions with no further rain expected next week.
