Lahésio Bonfim elected as senator for Maranhão

Lahésio Bonfim has been elected as a senator for Maranhão following the 2026 elections, securing 1,471,859 votes. A physician and former mayor of São Pedro dos Crentes, Bonfim previously finished second in the race for the governorship of Maranhão in 2022.

Born in the interior of Piauí to a cowboy and a teacher, Bonfim studied in public schools before earning a medical degree from a state university. His political career is rooted in Maranhão, where he served as mayor of São Pedro dos Crentes, winning reelection in 2020 with over 90% of the valid votes. His new eight-year term in the National Congress is set to begin in 2027.
