Lai Chau promotes medicinal plant cultivation and forest-based economic models

In Vietnam's Lai Chau province, local authorities and residents are shifting toward high-value agricultural models to boost economic growth and forest conservation. The province has announced 118 investment projects targeting high-tech agriculture, forestry, tourism, and natural resources.

A key focus is the development of medicinal plants under forest canopies. With over 511,000 hectares of forest—96% of which is natural forest—the region is leveraging its biodiversity to cultivate high-value species such as cardamom, sa nhân, and Lai Chau ginseng. This strategy involves enterprises and cooperatives working with local residents to establish raw material zones, implement deep processing, and provide technical transfers.

By integrating medicinal plant cultivation with non-timber forest products and ecotourism, the province aims to create sustainable livelihoods for highland communities while ensuring the long-term protection of its forest ecosystems.
