Lajeado do Bugre former mayor's murder conviction

A jury tribunal in Passo Fundo, Rio Grande do Sul, has convicted two men for their roles in the 2022 murder of Roberto Maciel Santos, the former mayor of Lajeado do Bugre.

Rafael dos Santos Lyrio was sentenced to 38 years in prison for qualified homicide. The crime occurred on November 24, 2022, when an individual entered the mayor's office and opened fire, killing Santos and wounding a municipal employee, Marcelo Wolff. The attack also targeted the vice-mayor, who managed to hide.

Victor Santos Lyrio, the cousin of the primary convict, was sentenced to 5 years and 6 months in a semi-open regime for extortion. While he was acquitted of homicide and attempted homicide, prosecutors established that he threatened the victim's family to demand 50,000 reais following the assassination.

The Public Ministry stated the motive for the attack involved political disagreements and demands for money from a criminal organization targeting municipal political agents following the election period. Investigations by the Civil Police indicated the involvement of ten people in the overall case.
