Lake Annecy economy driven by tourism and sports diversification
The economy surrounding Lake Annecy has reached a state of maturity, driven by a structured tourism and sports sector. Tourism supports approximately one-third of the assets in the Grand Annecy agglomeration, with 6,700 jobs—representing 8% of private sector employment in the destination—directly linked to accommodation and catering.
Business tourism also contributes significantly, having hosted 147,000 conference attendees in 2025 with an average spend of nearly 4,960 euros per person. To manage seasonal peaks and mitigate the impact on local residents, there is a strategic push toward diversifying activities through nautical sports such as sailing, paddleboarding, and diving. This approach aims to spread visitor numbers throughout the year rather than concentrating them in the summer months.
Regulatory measures are also being implemented to manage growth, including a cap on tourist furnished rentals, which will be limited to 2,660 authorizations by June 2026.
