Lake Babine Nation fishing nets vandalized

Members of the Lake Babine Nation in the Bulkley Valley-Lakes District have reported repeated acts of vandalism and theft targeting their salmon fishing gear at Babine Lake. Reported incidents include the illegal removal of nets at Noranda Landing and the deliberate tampering with community nets, which has resulted in significant harvest losses.

Verna Bisenberger, a member of the Old Fort community, stated that the attacks feel like a violation of their traditional way of life and identity. While it is unclear if the motives are theft or racism, the community has taken steps to protect their livelihood by hiring night monitors for the nets and implementing security measures at Noranda Landing to prevent vehicle vandalism.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada is currently assessing the information regarding these criminal acts.
