Lake Balaton faces environmental risks and infrastructure funding cuts

Experts and stakeholders at a Balaton Limnológiai Kutatóintézet (BLKI) event have warned that the current usage of Lake Balaton is unsustainable. Participants emphasized that continued practices pose serious risks to the lake's ecosystem and human use. Key concerns include excessive construction, the loss of green spaces, and the prioritization of short-term private interests over long-term ecological health and community access.

Simultaneously, significant infrastructure developments for the region have been halted. According to a government decision published in the Hungarian Gazette, plans for a Balaton railway loop and the electrification of the northern railway line have been excluded from the Integrated Transport Development Operational Program Plus (IKOP Plusz).

The cancellation of the railway loop, which would have connected Balatonaliga and Lepsény, and the loss of 7.5 billion HUF intended for electrification, may hinder efforts to shift passenger traffic from road to rail. Local officials and the Balaton Association have expressed concern that these decisions impact the region's accessibility and integrated transport management.
