Lake Balaton ferry terminals to undergo 6 billion HUF modernization

Balatoni Hajózási Zrt. (Bahart) has launched a 6 billion HUF complex development project to modernize ferry terminal infrastructures at Szántód and Tihany on Lake Balaton. The project, scheduled for completion by the end of 2027, is funded equally through the company’s own resources and grant support.

The modernization includes upgrading docks, buildings, transportation systems, roads, passenger information, and utilities. New facilities such as passenger waiting areas, ticket offices, bicycle storage, sanitary blocks, and service units will be constructed. To improve traffic flow, the project will redesign traffic lanes and boarding systems, introducing new traffic management solutions, e-lanes, and advance ticket purchasing.

In an effort to preserve the architectural and natural value of the Lake Balaton shore, the project includes the renovation of the iconic hyperbolic paraboloid waiting building in Szántód designed by János Dianóczky, as well as the protected stone-clad building in Tihany. The development aims to enhance the terminals' tourism and community functions through landscaped environments, viewing platforms, and catering units. Intensive construction work is expected to begin in October.
