Lake Balaton reports five drowning deaths during summer season
Five people died by drowning in Lake Balaton during the 2026 summer tourist season, matching the number of fatalities from the previous year. According to reports from the Balaton Water Police (BVRK) provided to the Siófok municipal council, the deaths involved various circumstances: two individuals fell or jumped from water bicycles, one fell from a small boat, one capsized while kayaking in open water, and a fifth died in approximately half a meter of water near the shore.
Authorities noted that in three of the cases, sudden illness or physical distress may have played a role. Despite the fatalities, water police officers successfully rescued 215 people across 129 separate incidents.
During peak heat, more than 300,000 people visited the lake simultaneously across various designated and non-designated bathing areas. The BVRK emphasized the need for continued prevention efforts, such as the Lifebuoy Program, and increased cooperation between local governments, water rescue organizations, and bathing site operators to enhance water safety.
