Lake Balaton researchers petition Constitutional Court over shoreline development

The Balaton Limnological Research Institute has appealed to the Constitutional Court to protect the Lake Balaton ecosystem from rapid and intensive shoreline development. Experts warn that current construction trends, particularly in areas like Fonyód, pose a critical threat to water quality, biological diversity, and the lake's long-term sustainability.

On the southern shore, development has already reached 75 percent, creating a precarious ecological balance. Researchers emphasize that the shoreline is a vital system for the lake's survival rather than a mere real estate strip. They argue that the fragmentation of natural habitats contributes to species loss and exacerbates the impact of heatwaves in urban areas.

Simultaneously, uncertainty surrounds high-value real estate developments in Balatonaliga. Following the sale of 15 prime lakeside plots by the Bayer Group to private investors, local concerns have been raised regarding the impact of large-scale villa construction. The situation is further complicated by the potential bankruptcy of Bayer Construct and ongoing debates regarding the regulatory framework governing shoreline development.
