Lake Balaton water levels hit historic lows amid ecological crisis
Lake Balaton is facing a critical environmental crisis as its average water level has dropped to a historic low, sitting just 33 centimeters below its historical baseline. This decline is driven by a prolonged negative water balance, where evaporation rates consistently exceed the replenishment provided by precipitation and inflows.
Experts, including Gábor Vasas, Director of the Balaton Limnological Research Institute, warn that the lake's ecological stability is at risk. The situation is exacerbated by ongoing construction in riparian zones, such as near the Pogány-völgy mouth, which diminishes the lake's natural ability to recover. Since 2000, there have been nearly ten years with negative water balances, but the current sustained period is unprecedented in its severity.
The low water levels have immediate economic and logistical consequences. Balatoni Hajózási Zrt. has advised tenants to remove sailboats from the water earlier than usual due to the rapid silting and shallowing of harbors. Because the lake is relatively shallow, with an average depth of only 3 to 3.5 meters, it remains highly vulnerable to these hydrological shifts.
