Lake City man ruled incompetent to stand trial for attempted murder

A Goodhue County judge has ruled that 81-year-old William Charles Piar is incompetent to stand trial regarding a shooting that occurred in December in Lake City, Minnesota.

Piar faces charges of first- and second-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault, and two counts of second-degree assault. According to criminal complaints, Piar allegedly shot a man in the abdomen near a Subway restaurant while the victim's wife and children were present in their apartment.

Law enforcement officers responded to reports of gunfire and encountered Piar at his home. After Piar reportedly refused to show his hands, an officer used a less-lethal beanbag shotgun to subdue him. Following the impact, Piar allegedly revealed a dark gray or black firearm and ignored commands to drop it.
