Lake Constance faces critical low water levels due to drought

Lake Constance is facing critical low water levels following an exceptionally dry year. The water level in Konstanz has dropped to approximately 248 centimeters, which is about 89 centimeters below the long-term average for this period.

Experts from the State Institute for the Environment Baden-Württemberg (LUBW) indicate that a sustainable recovery will require an autumn and winter with precipitation levels significantly above the seasonal norm. Factors contributing to the shortage include low snowfall in the Alps, which reduced spring meltwater in the Alpine Rhine, as well as high evaporation rates and low rainfall during the summer months.

The National Drought Platform of Switzerland has reported a level 4 drought danger for parts of the Lake Constance catchment area. In response, experts are urging municipalities to implement resilience measures, such as rainwater retention and blue-green infrastructure, to mitigate the impacts of water scarcity and heat.
