Lake Constance faces record temperatures and low water levels

Lake Constance is experiencing extreme environmental conditions, characterized by record-high water temperatures and critically low water levels. In early October, water temperatures in Bregenz reached 20.4 degrees Celsius, the highest recorded for this date since measurements began in 1979.

Simultaneously, the lake's water level has dropped below the 2.50-meter mark, with the Konstanz gauge measuring 2.49 meters. This decline is attributed to a combination of a snow-poor winter in the Alps, which reduced meltwater runoff, low precipitation, and high evaporation rates during a warm summer.

The low water levels have caused significant disruptions, including the suspension of shipping services on the Untersee due to the risk of vessels becoming stuck in harbor entrances. While the current levels are not absolute historical minimums, the situation remains unusual for the season. The German Weather Service has forecasted upcoming rainfall, though it is uncertain if this will be sufficient to raise the water levels significantly.
