Lake Constance: Geography and importance of the Central European lake
Lake Constance, known as Bodensee in German, is a significant glacial lake situated at the borders of Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. The lake serves as a vital natural reserve and water supply, providing approximately 130 million cubic meters of drinking water annually to the German state of Baden-Württemberg.
The Rhine river acts as the primary hydrological driver for the basin, entering through Switzerland and exiting near Stein am Rhein. The lake's northern shore is located within Germany, split between Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria. The surrounding landscape features hills, orchards, and vineyards set against the backdrop of the Alps.
In comparison to Lake Garda, Lake Constance has a larger surface area of 536 km² versus 370 km² and is longer at 63 km. However, Lake Garda is deeper, reaching 346 meters compared to Lake Constance's 256 meters, and holds a slightly larger water volume of 49.3 km³ compared to 48.5 km³.
