Lake Constance water levels drop below 2.50 meters amid drought

Lake Constance is experiencing critically low water levels, with the Konstanz gauge dropping below 2.50 meters. This decline is attributed to a combination of low Alpine snowmelt, insufficient precipitation, and high evaporation rates during a warm summer. Experts warn that the current situation is an echo of long-term climate trends.

The drought has significant economic and logistical impacts. Bodensee-Schiffsbetriebe (BSB) has suspended shipping services on the Untersee, including stops at Radolfzell, Iznang, Mannenbach, and Reichenau, to protect vessels and passengers from running aground.

Beyond the lake, regional water security is under pressure. In Baden-Württemberg, 61 percent of groundwater measuring points are below normal levels, with one in five reaching historical lows. Similarly, parts of Poland are facing hydrogeological threats due to declining groundwater levels, which may impact shallow wells used by farmers and rural residents.
