Lake County tests portable hydrants to combat wildfires
During the Lucas Fire in Mendocino and Lake Counties, local officials utilized a homegrown solution to combat wildfires by deploying portable fire hydrants that pump water directly from Clear Lake. This initiative, led by Northshore Fire Protection District Chief Shannon Banks, serves as a test for addressing inadequate water infrastructure in regions prone to climate-fueled wildfires.
Existing water systems in these remote areas were not designed to handle the demands of large-scale fire suppression. While previous investigations into major fires in Los Angeles County highlighted that local water systems struggle to suppress neighborhood-wide firestorm conditions, state agencies have yet to provide specific guidelines, mandates, or funding to help local governments adapt their water supplies for emergency response.
