Lake Cuitzeo restoration efforts intensify in Michoacán

The Government of Michoacán, through the State Fisheries Commission (Compesca), is intensifying efforts to restore Lake Cuitzeo. The operation utilizes five specialized machines to remove aquatic weeds that have proliferated in the area.

This weed growth negatively impacts the ecosystem by hindering water circulation, reducing oxygen levels, and limiting local fishing activities. Because Lake Cuitzeo is a temporary aquifer, the recovery operations are highly dependent on rainfall levels to allow machinery to access and operate within the lake.

Ramón Hernández Orozco, Director General of Compesca, stated that the actions are tailored to the lake’s unique hydrological characteristics to ensure environmental balance. The commission plans to continue these restoration efforts throughout the rainy season to improve environmental conditions and support the local fishing industry.
