Lake Garda exhibition showcases 19th‑century art at Museo di Salò

The Museo di Salò (MuSa) is hosting the "TOURIST!" exhibition until 4 October, presenting a visual history of Lake Garda in the 1800s. The show combines paintings, engravings, early photographs, travel diaries and period tourism posters to illustrate how painters, writers and travelers depicted the lake’s scenery, architecture and leisure life during Romanticism and the Belle Époque. Curators interweave railway posters, hotel catalogues and pocket maps, highlighting the lake’s role as a modern holiday destination.

The exhibition also situates the artwork within the historic town of Salò, a medieval fortified settlement that served as the capital of the Venetian Riviera. Highlights include the 15th‑century Cathedral of Santa Maria, the 18th‑century clock tower and remnants of the old moat that once protected the town. Together, the display offers a cultural snapshot of the region’s artistic and architectural heritage.
