Lake Garda sees October tourism boost as historic customs house reappears at low water

Lake Garda in northern Italy offers mild autumn conditions, with average highs of 18.7 °C and water temperatures around 19 °C in October. Hotels provide discounted stays and the climate supports hiking, mountain‑biking, sailing and wind‑sports such as kitesurfing. The reduced tourist crowds and lower prices make the lake an attractive destination for families and active travellers.

When the lake’s water level falls, the 19th‑century customs house built at Gargnano re‑emerges. Known as the Ex Regio Casello di dogana di Gargnano, the stone structure once marked the border between the Kingdom of Italy and the Austro‑Hungarian Empire. It sank after the Ponte‑Cola dam flooded the Valvestino valley in the early 1960s and now surfaces only during periods of low water, offering a rare glimpse of the region’s historic border control.

Both the pleasant October climate and the occasional visibility of the submerged customs house highlight Lake Garda’s blend of natural appeal and cultural heritage.
