Lake Garda tourism shifts as German visitor habits change
Tourism patterns around Lake Garda are undergoing a shift, particularly regarding German visitors. While camping sites remain highly occupied, local businesses and restaurants report a decline in high-spending German tourists. Although official data from SISTAR shows a slight increase in German overnight stays on the Venetian side of the lake in the first half of 2026, local operators note a change in behavior: visitors are staying for shorter durations, typically between three and five days, rather than the longer stays seen in previous years.
Despite these changes in visitor habits, the region continues to offer diverse accommodation options. Glamping and luxury camping remain popular, with facilities providing high-end amenities like heated pools, wellness services, and modern cottages. Travelers are also increasingly looking toward the autumn season to avoid summer crowds, finding quieter conditions for hiking, climbing, and exploring local culinary traditions such as olive harvests and wine festivals.
