Lake Garda tourism sees high occupancy despite economic concerns
The Lake Garda region in Italy experienced a record-breaking summer season in 2026, with accommodation occupancy reaching 85 percent in July and campsites reaching full capacity. German tourists remain a primary demographic, accounting for approximately 40 percent of visitors, followed by Italians at nearly 30 percent. Other significant visitor groups include travelers from the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, France, Switzerland, and Austria, with emerging markets from the USA and Brazil also showing growth.
Despite high occupancy rates and nightly prices ranging from 74 to 1,300 euros, local businesses face challenges. While the northern shore remains popular with German travelers, the southern shore attracts a more international crowd. Reports indicate that while visitor numbers are high, many tourists are staying for shorter durations, causing concern for local restaurateurs and retailers regarding overall profitability.
