Lake Kariba ferry disaster death toll rises to 93

The death toll from the Lake Kariba ferry disaster in Zimbabwe has risen to at least 93 people following the recovery of additional bodies. The vessel, identified as the Mbuya Nehanda and operated by the Rural Infrastructure Development Agency (RIDA), capsized on August 11, 2026, while traveling from Kariba town toward the Chalala fishing areas.

Authorities report that the ferry was significantly overloaded. While its licensed capacity was 90 passengers, estimates suggest between 150 and 222 people may have been on board. At least 77 people have been rescued, but search and recovery operations involving over 40 sub-aqua divers and multiple vessels continue as more bodies are expected to be found.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has declared the incident a national disaster and called for an overhaul of maritime safety. The tragedy is noted as the deadliest public transport accident in Zimbabwe's history. Among the identified victims, police have confirmed at least 39 children, including infants.
