Lake Kariba ferry capsizes in Zimbabwe, leaving 15 dead and 27 missing
An overloaded ferry named Mbuya Nehanda capsized on Lake Kariba, located on the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia, on Tuesday, August 11, 2026. The incident occurred when the vessel encountered strong waves and turbulence while traveling between Kariba and Chalala fishing camps.
At least 15 people have been confirmed dead, and 27 people remain missing. Emergency responders and rescue teams, including a sub-aqua unit, have successfully rescued 77 survivors, who were moved to an island on the lake for safety.
While the ferry has a certified carrying capacity of 90 passengers, official ticket records confirmed 114 adult passengers and five crew members were on board. Authorities noted that the actual number of people may be significantly higher, as children below the age required for ticketing were likely present but not accounted for in official manifests.
Local officials, including Cecilia Chitiyo, have recommended that the accident be officially declared a state of disaster. Search and rescue operations continue despite challenging weather conditions on the lake.
