Lake Kariba ferry disaster leaves at least 46 dead
A major ferry disaster on Lake Kariba has resulted in at least 46 confirmed deaths. The vessel, identified as the Mbuya Nehanda, capsized on August 12, 2026, while traveling from Kariba toward Chalala.
Discrepancies regarding the number of people on board have emerged. While the ferry was designed for a capacity of 90 people, official reports from the Disaster Management Agency stated it carried at least 114 adult passengers and five crew members. However, a surviving crew member and ticketing official reported a count of 153 people, including infants.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa has acknowledged “serious deficiencies” in Zimbabwe’s maritime safety capabilities and has pledged a thorough investigation. The incident has prompted widespread calls for an overhaul of maritime safety regulations and enforcement. Local communities have also attributed the tragedy to the “Binga Wave,” a sudden, powerful wave phenomenon, though no scientific evidence has been presented to link the disaster to supernatural causes.
