Lake Koroneia faces disappearance after 94% reduction in water area
Lake Koroneia, once Greece's fifth largest lake, is facing potential disappearance due to rapid shrinkage. Satellite imagery from the National Observatory of Athens and the Copernicus program shows that the lake's water area has decreased by approximately 94% from its original size.
Data from the Meteo scientific team indicates a significant decline over recent years. In 1984, the lake covered 42.8 square kilometers. By 2016, the area had reduced to 34.4 square kilometers. The rate of shrinkage has accelerated sharply in the last three years: the area was 29.8 square kilometers in 2024, 17.9 square kilometers in 2025, and reached approximately 2.7 square kilometers by 2026.
Experts note that while previous interventions by authorities provided temporary recovery, the environmental degradation has returned. This ongoing shrinkage poses a direct threat to the region's flora and fauna, highlighting an urgent need for systematic monitoring and effective water resource management to facilitate long-term restoration.
