Lake Macquarie City Council endorses affordable housing plan
Lake Macquarie City Council has endorsed a plan proposed by Mayor Adam Shultz to explore using council-owned land for affordable housing. The motion passed with a 10-1 vote.
Council staff are currently investigating suitable sites, and expressions of interest will be sent to community housing providers regarding proposals for the land. Supporters of the plan noted that the initiative aims to address rising rent costs and homelessness within the community.
During the debate, councillors emphasized that the council does not intend to act as a developer, but rather seeks to work with agencies to provide low-cost housing options that the free market may not guarantee.
