Lake Macquarie Council arson driver admits reckless role in $38 million blaze

A fire set on 27 November 2024 devastated the Lake Macquarie City Council administration building in Speers Point, NSW. The attack, carried out by arsonist Scott Paul Matheson and getaway driver Tony Charles Graham, caused about $38.5 million in damage and forced the evacuation of roughly 400 council staff. Rebuilding is expected to take three years and cost nearly $40 million, with the building unlikely to reopen before October 2027.

Both men pleaded guilty and were scheduled for sentencing in the Newcastle District Court. Prosecutor Caitlin Nash emphasized the need for the “strongest condemnation” and highlighted the lasting community harm. A letter from council chief executive Tony Farrell noted the human cost beyond monetary loss. Media reports suggested a “big developer” may have commissioned the attack. Graham’s barrister argued he had a largely crime‑free background and personal depression issues, but the court stressed the seriousness of the offence.
