Italy authorities crack down on illegal fishing and food safety violations
Authorities in Italy have conducted several operations targeting food safety violations and illegal fishing.
In Caivano, Carabinieri and NAS inspectors discovered insects and worms in food supplies intended for minors in five socio-assistive structures managed by a single cooperative. The investigation led to the suspension of a food warehouse and the seizure of approximately 500 kilograms of products lacking proper traceability. The legal representative of the cooperative has been reported to authorities.
On Lake Maggiore, the Provincial Police of Varese and Carabinieri apprehended a 57-year-old Swiss citizen for illegal fishing in Italian waters. The individual was using professional “flying nets” totaling 1.5 kilometers in length to catch fish, including valuable coregon, during the night. Authorities seized the catch, the nets, and the motorboat used in the operation.
Additional enforcement actions included the seizure of two quintals of seafood in Bari due to lack of traceability and fishing during biological rest periods, and a major operation in Trentino where two tons of fish were seized due to poor preservation, lack of traceability, or expiration.
