Donald Trump renames Lake Ontario to Lake America via executive order
President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to rename Lake Ontario as ‘Lake America’ on the United States side. The move comes amid a significant trade dispute between the U.S. and Canada, following the imposition of 50% tariffs on approximately $20 billion in Canadian goods. Trump stated the renaming was motivated by an average annual loss of $60 billion to Canada over the last 15 years.
The order directs the Interior Secretary and the Board on Geographic Names to update federal maps, documents, and communications within 30 days. While the U.S. government can change how it refers to landmarks, the order does not mandate changes by other nations or private entities. In response, MapQuest announced it will not change the name on its digital maps, and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney asserted the lake will remain known as Lake Ontario.
Indigenous leaders, including Wendat Nation Grand Chief Pierre Picard, have condemned the decision, describing it as an attempt to eradicate Indigenous history and culture. Meanwhile, Canada has announced it will respond to U.S. duties with its own counter-tariffs.
