Lake Pamvotis cleanup recovers over 45 tons of waste

Divers conducting an underwater cleanup of Lake Pamvotis in Ioannina have recovered more than 45 tons of waste. The operation, initiated in July by the Organization of Natural Environment and Climate Change (OFYPEKA), is scheduled to continue until the end of the year.

Items retrieved include tires, televisions, bicycles, large metal objects, a wheelchair, and even a boat roof. Notably, divers also discovered World War II era munitions, including helmets, weapons, and shells, which authorities are working to remove safely.

OFYPEKA officials stated that suitable materials are being sent for recycling. The initiative aims to protect the lake's ecosystem and raise awareness about the environmental impact of waste, emphasizing the need for greater responsibility from local professionals who operate on the lake.
