Lake Pamvotis cleaning uncovers WWII shells and debris

The Natural Environment and Climate Change Organization (OFYPEKA) has recovered two World War II-era shells during an ongoing underwater cleaning operation in Lake Pamvotis, Ioannina. This discovery is part of the second phase of a comprehensive underwater cleaning program aimed at protecting and restoring the lake's ecosystem.

In addition to the historical artifacts, divers have retrieved a wide array of debris that had remained submerged for decades, including motorcycles, bicycles, boats, vehicle tires, agricultural machinery, household appliances, and large metal structures. The current phase of the operation covers approximately 328,250 square meters across four specific areas of the lake where significant waste accumulation was identified.

Beyond waste removal, the project includes inspecting the condition of pits and monitoring the main pipes that discharge into the lake. OFYPEKA stated that the systematic recording of these findings provides vital data regarding the pressures facing the lake's ecosystem, which will assist in planning future management and protection actions. The works are expected to be completed by the end of the year.
