Lake petitions in British Columbia and California call for action on invasive plants and wetland protection
Residents around Hatzic Lake in British Columbia have gathered more than 1,500 signatures demanding coordinated removal of invasive aquatic plants, including flowering rush, yellow floating heart and Eurasian watermilfoil. The petition highlights threats to recreation, fish habitat and water quality, and urges the Ministry of Forests to expand its invasive‑plant program.
In Southern California, a petition to protect the historic wetlands of Lake Elsinore has attracted roughly 750 signatures. Organiser Luis Cruces and local supporters cite illegal dumping, off‑road vehicle traffic and unmanaged encampments as degrading the habitat. Mayor Bob Magee noted the city spends over $2 million annually on cleanup and has discussed the issue with the state Department of Fish and Wildlife, while also urging Governor Gavin Newsom to take further action.
