Lake Seksty yacht sinking triggers prosecutor investigation

The Olsztyn District Prosecutor's Office has launched an investigation following an incident on Lake Seksty where four out of five yachts sank during an organized sailing trip. On the evening of August 6, strong wind gusts caused the vessels to capsize. While nearly 40 participants were evacuated safely, one trainee sustained injuries requiring medical attention.

Investigators are examining why the group departed from Okartowo toward Lake Śniardwy despite active weather alerts and late afternoon timing, which hindered completing the route before sunset. Authorities are also verifying the technical condition of the yachts, potential overcrowding, and whether the organizers demonstrated a lack of responsibility by ignoring official weather warnings.
