Lake Solina water levels drop due to hydrological drought
The water level of Lake Solina, a major retention reservoir on the San River in Poland's Podkarpackie Voivodeship, has dropped significantly due to hydrological drought. The receding shoreline, which has moved back by dozens of meters in areas such as Polańczyk and Zawóz, has exposed the foundations of former villages that were submerged when the reservoir was created in the 1960s.
While the water depth remains sufficient for most watercraft in major regions, the visible decline is a result of high temperatures and prolonged lack of precipitation. Although similar fluctuations occurred in 2003, 2011, and 2022, experts note that climate change—characterized by rising average temperatures and altered precipitation patterns—is causing these extreme water level drops to occur more frequently and intensely.
