Lake Tisza water reserves exhausted due to extreme drought
Extreme drought and low precipitation have exhausted the usable water reserves of Lake Tisza. The Central Tisza Water Directorate (Kötivizig) reports that the water level at Kisköre-felső has approached the critical 610-centimeter threshold, which is the minimum value defined in water management permits.
During the first eight months of the year, precipitation-based river discharge in the Tisza catchment area was only about one-quarter of the historical average, compounded by higher-than-average evaporation due to heat. To mitigate the impact, authorities have begun gradually reducing the Tiszalök dam reservoir level to 400 centimeters to release water to the lower reaches of the river.
In Szolnok, the situation poses a direct threat to the drinking water supply. Officials have deployed mobile pump stations and backup units at the local surface waterworks to ensure continuity. Projections suggest the water level at Szolnok could drop significantly, potentially reaching a level of minus 334 centimeters.
