Lake Trasimeno unexploded WWII bomb resurfaces

An unexploded bomb from World War II has resurfaced in Lake Trasimeno near Castiglione del Lago. The device was revealed due to receding water levels and was found on a beach near Lido Arezzo, close to the Guardia di Finanza canine training center.

Law enforcement has cordoned off the area to prevent public access while awaiting specialized Army bomb disposal experts. The experts are expected to remove the ordnance and perform a controlled detonation to ensure safety.

The discovery serves as a reminder of the combat that occurred in the Trasimeno area during the movement of the front lines in June 1944. Similar unexploded munitions, including bombs and bullets, continue to be found along the coasts of Castiglione del Lago and Sant’Arcangelo di Magione as the lake's water levels drop.
