Turkey's Tuz Gölü turns pink, sparking surge of tourists
During the summer heat, Turkey's second‑largest lake, Tuz Gölü, transformed into a vivid pink hue. Scientists say rising air temperatures and lower water levels encouraged pink‑pigmented microorganisms to bloom, creating a striking color especially at sunrise and sunset.
The phenomenon drew large numbers of both domestic and foreign visitors who walked the lake’s shores, took photographs, and swam in the saline waters. One visitor, Songül Erdem, said, "The pink colour impressed me deeply. The lake is beautiful and refreshing; it helped my asthma." Another local reported using the lake regularly for its perceived health benefits, noting, "My feet are painful, and the lake water makes me feel better."
Tourists also called for protecting the natural spectacle, urging greater environmental awareness to preserve the lake’s unique appearance.
