Lake Van faces water loss despite increased precipitation

The Lake Van Basin in Turkey is facing persistent drought pressure driven by global warming, rising temperatures, and intense evaporation. Despite a significant increase in precipitation this year, the water loss in Lake Van has not been prevented.

Prof. Dr. Faruk Alaeddinoğlu, a faculty member at Van Yüzüncü Yıl University, noted that while much of the recent precipitation fell as snow—which is vital for slowly feeding underground systems through gradual melting—the long-term effects of climate change continue to impact the basin. He emphasized that 20-25 years of data indicate a trend of rising temperatures, high evaporation rates, and decreasing precipitation, suggesting the basin may face even more difficult environmental challenges in the future.
