Lake Van morning swimming becomes a tradition for seniors in Ahlat
In the Ahlat district of Bitlis, a morning swimming tradition has emerged among adults aged 50 to 80 at the shores of Lake Van. Participants gather daily at the new pier and the Uygulama Oteli beach around 07:00, with swimming activities typically lasting from 07:30 until 09:30.
Participants credit the lake's soda-rich waters for their vitality and health. Retired teacher İbrahim Behlül Şerefoğlu, who has been part of the activity for 13 years, noted that what began randomly has grown into groups of 100 to 120 people. The ritual has also become a social event, often accompanied by breakfasts on the shore.
According to locals, the alkaline water provides a cleansing sensation, and many find they do not require a shower after swimming, only a freshwater rinse to prevent hair discoloration. The practice has become a widespread habit in the area, fostering both physical fitness and social bonds among the elderly residents.
