Lake Velence water level collapse triggers fish die‑off and real‑estate slowdown

The water level of Lake Velence in Hungary has fallen dramatically, with the National Water Management Authority projecting a drop to just 20 cm by August. The steep decline has wiped out about 80 % of the lake’s fish stock, leaving only a few invasive silver carp alive.

At the same time, property market data show a sharp fall in demand for holiday homes around the lake. In the five surveyed settlements, overall interest in homes and apartments fell by roughly 7 % compared with the previous year, while inquiries for vacation rentals dropped 26 %. Buyers are now favouring permanent‑use properties, viewing the lake’s proximity to Budapest and Székesfehérvár as a residential advantage rather than a short‑term tourism site.
