Lake Zdworskie and Kashmir Lakes Face Severe Degradation

Lake Zdworskie in the Płock district of Poland is experiencing a marked drop in water level and ongoing ecological decline despite interventions by the Regional Water Management Board, local officials and water authorities. County executive Sylwester Ziemkiewicz warned the lake is “slowly dying” and called for intensified research, non‑standard measures and coordinated action among institutions.

In the Kashmir region, nearly half of the lakes have vanished or shrunk dramatically since 1967. Climate change, pollution, untreated sewage and unregulated construction are accelerating the loss, harming fisheries, local livelihoods and the area’s capacity to retain flood water. Experts cite the shrinking of Lake Dal in Srinagar and Lake Wular, noting drastic drops in fish catches and rising health risks for workers cleaning the waters.
