Lake Zurich water level hits 75-year record low
Lake Zurich has reached its lowest water level in 75 years, dropping to 404.45 meters above sea level. This record low surpasses the previous minimum of 405.46 meters recorded in 1952.
The Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) attributes the decline to a persistent drought in Switzerland, characterized by significantly below-average rainfall and temperatures that have frequently exceeded seasonal norms. This environmental condition has resulted in dry soils and low levels of both surface and groundwater.
The receding waters have caused significant disruptions to local transportation and recreation. The Zürichsee-Schifffahrtsgesellschaft AG (ZSG) has implemented several operational restrictions, including the suspension of services along the Limmat river and changes to lake tour routes. Additionally, the Horgen-Meilen ferry has restricted the transport of heavy trucks and low-clearance vehicles due to the steepness of the ramps caused by the low water level. Local amenities, such as the municipal pool in Stäfa, have also closed certain piers for safety reasons.
