Lakeridge Health introduces AI-enhanced stroke imaging in Durham Region

Lakeridge Health has introduced CT Perfusion with RapidAI, an advanced brain imaging technology, to the Durham Region for the first time. The technology is currently available at the Ajax Pickering and Oshawa hospitals.

CT Perfusion utilizes specialized CT scans to monitor blood flow through the brain, while RapidAI employs artificial intelligence to analyze the images rapidly. This combination allows medical teams to identify damaged brain tissue versus areas that may still be saved through treatment. The technology is intended to assist doctors in administering clot-busting medications or determining if a patient requires specialized procedures to remove blood clots.

According to Lakeridge Health, the implementation of this technology allows for more immediate care closer to home and assists in identifying patients who require transfer to specialized stroke centers in Toronto. The hospital noted that this advancement is a step toward establishing a comprehensive stroke center within the Durham Region.
