Lakewood police officer killed in Colorado bus shooting

A Lakewood police officer was killed and three other officers were wounded during a shootout on a Regional Transportation District (RTD) bus in Colorado on Thursday evening. The incident occurred near the intersection of West Colfax Avenue and Wadsworth Boulevard around 6:30 p.m.

Authorities stated that officers responded to a report of a suspicious person who may have been involved in a hit-and-run earlier that day. When officers approached the suspect as he attempted to board a northbound bus, the man opened fire. The suspect, identified by The Denver Post as 34-year-old parolee Gabriel Steven Garcia, was shot and killed by police at the scene.

Officer Nicholas Graham, 33, died from his injuries. Three other officers were wounded; two have been released from the hospital, while a third remains hospitalized in stable condition. A civilian bystander was also injured during the gunfire.

Colorado Governor Jared Polis and Lakewood Mayor Wendi Strom issued statements expressing grief and praising the officers for their service. The Jefferson County Critical Incident Response Team is investigating the shooting.
