Lakhimpur Kheri biopolymer plant set to begin operations in October
India’s first large-scale biopolymer plant is expected to begin operations in October in the Lakhimpur Kheri district of Uttar Pradesh. The facility, constructed at a cost of Rs 3,080 crore, represents a significant step toward sustainable industrial growth by integrating the entire production chain on a single campus.
The manufacturing process will convert locally cultivated sugarcane into sugar and subsequently into Polylactic Acid (PLA)-based bioplastic. To mitigate environmental impact, the plant will utilize a Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) system to prevent harmful liquid waste from entering local rivers or drains.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath laid the foundation stone for the project in February 2025 at the Kumbhi sugar unit of Balrampur Chini Mills. Officials noted that the project is intended to promote eco-friendly manufacturing while creating employment opportunities for local youth.
